Bakari...I admire your devotion to revealing the truth and dispeling the tremendous amount of unfounded "truth" we experience every day. I also am intrigued with your linking that thought to ideology. So many of us are invested in an ideology of one sort or another. One may just be the "model" of the world we hold onto..our world view. So "truth" is what? For me, most "truth" is the agreement among people of what they hold onto to make sense of their life experience and bring some order to the chaos that experience can be. So "truth" is constantly shifting and can be easily exposed as a passing belief, an organizing principle. Even in science, which goes beyond "opinion" and "belief", we find a history of changing "truth". My opinion...but "truth" to me.
ReplyDeleteIdeology being a model. Interesting. I could see that.
DeleteI think of truth as being a reflection of objective reality.
Granted, on the deepest philosophical level it is impossible to prove, but I do actually believe that the world exists outside of my own mind.
If so, then it exists outside of all of our minds.
If we were all gone, planets would still orbit stars, which would orbit galaxy clusters.
Rain would still fall on Earth, volcanoes would explode, and rocks would roll down hill.
Perception limits what we can know of reality, but it does not define reality.
I am defining "truth" as what really is, independent of our interpretations.
Assuming our senses are being fed legit information about the real world around us, we can make observations and use basic rules of logic and deduction to figure things out.
That is basically the meaning of science. It doesn't matter how many people agree on the same myth, if an experiment proves it wrong, then it is wrong.
Scientists sometimes gets things wrong, because they are humans with limited information, but science itself has the correction process built-in - its history of change is a good thing. It is an example of it working properly. It changes only for newer and better information.
This is all in great contrast to the method most people use of tradition, hear-say, and anecdote as the primary methods for learning about and understanding the world around us.
I try to apply the same idea not just to the physical world, but also to politics and society.
My commitment to these principals sometimes puts me at odds with people I tend to side with on most issues. Hence my new explanation of this blog :)
